ஒரு நீதிமன்றம் ஒரு வழக்கில் கொடுத்த தீர்ப்பை, அதற்கு இணையான அதிகாரமுள்ள நீதிமன்றங்களோ, கீழ்நீதி மன்றங்களோ அதை முன்னுதாரணமாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு, அதே மாதிரியான வழக்குகளைக் கையாளும், தீர்ப்பளிக்கும் நடைமுறை. இந்த நடைமுறை சட்ட மற்றும் நீதி பரிபாலன நடைமுறைகளை ஸ்திரப்படுத்த உதவும். மேலும் ஒரே மாதிரியான வழக்குகளில் உள்ள சட்ட நுணுக்கங்களை ஆராய்வதில் செலவிடும் நேரத்தை இந்த நடைமுறை மிச்சப்படுத்தும்.

doctrine The policy of courts of law to stand by precedence and not disturb settled points; any decision made by the court is binding on that court and on other courts of equal or lower rank when the same or a similar issue arises in the future. Policies of courts do change, but only rarely and with good cause because of this doctrine.
