ஒரு நபர் செய்த குற்றத்திற்காகவோ அல்லது விளைவித்த சேதாரத்திற்காகவோ அவர் மீது வழக்கு தொடுக்க நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்ட காலஅவகாசம். இந்தக் கால அவகாசத்தைத் தாண்டிய எந்த வழக்கையும் நீதிமன்றங்கள் விசாரணைக்கு அனுமதிக்காது. ஆனால் கொலைக்குற்றங்கள் இதிலிருந்து விதிவிலக்களிக்கப்பட்டு, அதைக் காலம் கடந்தும் நீதிமன்றங்கள் விசாரணைக்கு எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும். இது தவிர பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்களால் (வாதி) பாதிப்பை உணர்ந்து செயல்படமுடியாத பட்சத்திலோ அல்லது நீதிமன்ற அல்லது சட்ட அலுவலர்கள் புகாரின் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க இயலா நிலையிலோ (doctrine of contra non valentem) இந்தக் கால வரையிலிருந்து விதிவிலக்களிக்கப்படும்.

A law that specifies the amount of time within which a person must be charged with a crime or sued for damages. Courts do not hear cases involving acts that occurred beyond this time limit. The major exception is homicide; a person can be charged with this crime no matter how long after the event. Another exception is the doctrine of contra non valentem, which provides that the statute of limitations does not apply to one who is unable to bring an action.
