The limited right of a police officer to detain and search an individual who acts suspiciously or who may be carrying an unlicensed dangerous weapon. In the United States this right has been upheld in Supreme Court cases (such as Terry v. Ohio), but only when strictly related to the circumstances that justified the stop.
