Financial assistance to people attending colleges or other educational institutions, mostly through grants or loans. Sources of funds are privately funded scholarships, foundation grants, and state and federal grant and loan programs. The major federal programs include Pell Grants (based on a formula of student need and expected family contribution); National Direct Student Loans (low-interest loans to needy students); Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (based on need); Guaranteed Student Loans (the government guarantees repayment to banks that lend money to students); and the College Work Study Program, which provides matching funds to colleges to hire students on campus.
