தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்வதற்கான காரணங்கள், தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்ளத் திட்டமிடுதல், தற்கொலைச் சம்பவங்கள், தற்கொலையினால் ஏற்பட்ட விளவுகள், தற்கொலையைத் தடுத்தல் போன்றவற்றில் கவனம் செலுத்தும் அறிவியல் - இந்த அறிவியல், தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்ள எண்ணுபவர்களையும், தற்கொலையால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட குடும்பங்கள் மற்றும் நண்பர்களுடன் தொடர்பு கொண்டு ஆய்வை மேற்கொள்கிறது. பெரும்பாலான தற்கொலையியல் வல்லுனர்கள் மனநல மருத்துவர்களாகவும், சமூகப்பணியாளர்களாகவும் இருப்பது கண்கூடு. வாசிங்டனை தலைமையிடமாகக் கொண்டு அமெரிக்கத் தற்கொலையியல் சங்கம் 1968 ஆம் ஆண்டிலிருந்து செயல்பட்டு வருகின்றது.

The scientific study of the act of taking one's own life-its motivations, progression, incidence, consequences, and prevention. Professionals who engage in such study and work with those affected by suicide or suicidal ideation are known as suicidologists. Most suicidologists are mental health professionals, including social workers. Many belong to the American Association of Suicidology, the Washington-based professional association founded in 1968.
