இலத்தீன் மற்றும் ஸ்பானிய மொழி பேசும் மக்களிடையே தென்படும் கலாச்சாரத் தொடர்புடைய நோய். அதிர்ச்சியான ஒரு சம்பவத்தை நேரடியாகப் பார்க்கும் போது ஏற்படும் அச்சத்தால் உடலைவிட்டு ஆன்மா வெளியேறிவிடுவதால் ஏற்படும் மகிழ்ச்சியின்மை, தூக்கக் கோளாறுகள், பசி மந்தம் எனும் சோற்றில் தேட்டமின்மை, வெறித்த பார்வை, ஊக்கமிழப்பு, பல்வேறு உடலுபாதைகள், வயிற்றுப்போக்கு போன்ற உபாதைகள் தோன்றி, சில நாட்களுக்கோ அல்லது வருடக்கணக்கிலோ தொடரும். சமயச் சடங்குகள் மற்றும் மூலிகை மருத்துவத்தால் உடலைவிட்டுப் பிரிந்த ஆன்மாவை மீண்டும் உடலுக்குள் கொண்டு வந்த பிறகே நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டவர் இந்த அறிகுறிகளிலிருந்து மீளுவார் என்பது கலாச்சார நம்பிக்கை.

A culture-bound syndrome most common to Latinos and Spanish-speaking peoples in which the individual experiences sickness and unhappiness, which is said to be caused by the soul leaving the body after a frightening event. Symptoms include sleep disorders, appetite disturbances, and various somatic ailments, sometimes days to years after the onset event. Ritual healings to call the soul back to the body sometimes reduce or eliminate the symptoms.
