Therapy என்றால் சிகிச்சை என்று பொருள். பலவிதமான சிகிச்சை முறைகளைக் கையாண்டு, நோயாளிக்கு மருந்துகொடுத்து குணப்படுத்துபவரை மருத்துவர் என்றும், உடலியக்கப் பயிற்சிகள் மூலமோ, ஆலோசனை மூலமோ ஒருவருடைய நோயைக் குணப்படுத்துபவரைச் சிகிச்சையாளர் என்று சொல்லலாம். சில நேரங்களில் மருத்துவம் படித்தவர்களே சில சிகிச்சை முறைகளில் பயிற்சி எடுத்து சிகிச்சையாளர்களாக செயல்படுவதுண்டு. சமூகப் பணியாளர்கள், உளப்பிணி சிகிச்சை, குடும்பச் சிகிச்சை, தொழில் சிகிச்சை என்று பல சிகிச்சை முறைகளில் பங்கேற்பதுண்டு.

One who helps individuals to overcome or abate disease, disability, or problems. Usually a therapist has had extensive training and supervised experience and often uses specialized techniques, tools, medications, and resources to accomplish goals. Social workers often use this term as a synonym for psychotherapist and are more specific when discussing other kinds of therapists, such as physical therapists, marital therapists, and occupational therapists.
