The classification of techniques used by social workers in direct work with individual clients, formulated by Florence Hollis in the 1960s and later with Mary E. Woods (Casework: A Psycho-social Therapy, 4th ed., New York: McGraw-Hill, 1989, pp. 114-123). The techniques consist of sustaining procedures, direct influence, ventilation, reflective consideration of the person situation configuration, reflection about the dynamics of patterns or tendencies, and thinking about the historical development of those patterns. The typology permits examination of environmental as well as internal influences.
