utility theory

In economics, the concept that a person obtains satisfaction (utility) through the consumption of goods and that the individual will attempt to establish priorities of consumption to achieve the highest possible level of satisfaction. The theory suggests that the higher the level of satisfaction for a given cost and unit of time, the more desirable a particular item.
