குழந்தைகள் மற்றும் அவர்கள் குடும்பங்களின் பிரத்யேகத் தேவைகளைப் பள்ளி நிர்வாகம் அறிந்துகொள்ளவும், அத்தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்ய தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் உதவவும், கல்வி (பள்ளி நிர்வாகத்தாலே) அமைப்பிலே உருவாக்கப்பட்டு செயல்படுத்தப்படும் நிபுணத்துவம் வாய்ந்த சேவைகள். ஆரம்பத்தில் இந்த சேவை ஆசிரியர்களால் வழங்கப்பட்டது. பின்னர் ஒவ்வொரு கல்வி மாவட்டத்திலும் சமூகப்பணியாளர்கள் மூலமாக இச்சேவைகள் வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. 1916 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்ட வருகை தரு ஆசிரியர்களின் தேசிய சங்கம், பள்ளி சமூகப்பணிப் பிரிவாகி, 1921 ஆம் ஆண்டு தேசிய சமூகப்பணியாளர் சம்மேளனத்துடன் இணைந்தது.

Programs within the educational system in which professionals in school social work provide personal social services to students and their families and help acquaint the schools with the special needs of these families. Originally these services were provided by educators, but eventually professional social workers assumed these duties in many school districts. The National Association of Visiting Teachers, which was established in 1916, was absorbed into the American Association of Social Workers (AASW) as the School Social Work Section in 1921.
