Advocate for public health and child welfare programs, she founded one of the most influential of the settlement houses, the Henry Street Settlement in New York, and with Florence Kelley founded the U.S. Children's Bureau. In 1970 she became the second social worker, after Jane Addams, to be included in the Hall of Fame for Great Americans.
