Informing those people in positions of influence or authority out-side an organization about the existence of an organization's practices that are illegal, wasteful, dangerous, or otherwise contrary to its stated policies. The informant is compelled to notify outsiders (investigative commissions, the media, ombudspersons, congresspersons, and others) because authorities within the organization ignore complaints. Some organizations, such as the U.S. government, encourage whistle blowing by maintaining toll-free hot lines for anonymous tipsters and by trying to protect employees from subsequent retribution from their employers. Organizations such as the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) give awards to whistle-blowers whose information has led to significant improvements. NASW bestows a biennial prize, the Jack Otis Whistleblower Award, to social workers who take steps to prevent unethical practices of employing organizations.
