The Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children, established in 1972 to provide assistance services under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program is designed to protect women, infants, and children, who are identified as being at risk of nutritional deficiency as a result of inadequate income, primarily by subsidizing certain food purchases.
